Signed into law on August 6, 1965, by President Lyndon Johnson, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 prohibited racial discrimination in voting. In the last presidential election, six key states were won by a total of less than 600,000 votes. More than 3X that many eligible Black voters in these states didn’t show up at the polls.
